Terminology is key when translating specialised material, and it is essential to ensure both accuracy and consistency. This is where TMs and termbases can really shine. However, a termbase or translation memory is only as good as the effort put into updating and maintaining it. I am always careful to work closely with all available TMs and termbases, but also to keep abreast of any changes or updates when working with regular clients. In the ideal scenario, the client will update translators with any terminology concerns or changes - I am fortunate enough to work with several clients who take quality very seriously and send regular updates. However, even being aware of details added to terms in a termbase and knowing how to display notes added to terms by the termbase manager is also invaluable in ensuring that the correct terms are used - and used consistently.
