When clients request literal translations, this is how I handle the situation

When clients request literal translations, I first make sure I clearly understand their expectations and the purpose of the text. Then, I explain in a professional and friendly way how a word-for-word translation may affect clarity, cultural accuracy, and natural flow in the target language. If the client insists, I usually provide two short samples: one literal version and one natural, context-adapted version, so they can see the difference themselves. This way, they feel respected and involved in the process while also understanding the value of my professional judgment. Most of the time, clients choose the more natural translation once they see the comparison. I believe this approach builds trust, maintains professionalism, and ensures the final text meets both the client’s needs and the expectations of the target audience.
