When clients request literal translations, this is how I handle the situation

I understand that you want your survey to be perfect and that you and your team worked hard to create a perfect version in the original language.

But sometimes, phrasing a sentence differently in French will yield better results with a French speaker.

Here is why:

A French speaker may not understand the metaphor you’re trying to use. It’s my job to find another image that will work as well on a French speaker as the image you chose worked on your source audience.
What you’re trying to say is implied in the French phrasing. In this case, translating literally would make the French version sound awkward and redundant. Rephrasing the sentence will help keep your respondent engaged in the survey and keen to give you the best insight possible.
