I have an M.A. in English and Italian and have spent the last 5 years working as a full time translator, dealing mainly with contracts and feasibility studies.

When clients request literal translations, this is how I handle the situation

I spend time talking to them about what they meant by what they wrote. I then give them an idea of how I would translate that bit, and ask them if that’s what they were trying to say.
If I see I got the gist, I translate the text in a way that conveys what they were trying to say instead of what they actually wrote
