Being a medical doctor as well as a practising psychological counsellor, accurate communication is key. There is never any room for error in either of these fields without huge cost to the client. I apply the same in translating work. Understanding what my client wants a hundred percent through actuve listening, follow up questions and thinking out loud, understanding if the deadlines are actually attainable is vital in delivering a job done to hundred percent satisfaction. I will however never produce work based on guess work, as that leaves room for error and ambiguity.

Literal translations is a necessity in work such as medical transcriptions or any other legal documentation translations. However if this is with regards to a movie or a drama then the main focus needs to be on delivery of the content expressed, in the translated language using a sensible flow of that language. I would bring this up and have it clarified as to what my work needs to be from the point of view of the client. Fingers crossed we both want what’s best for the target audience because that would be what keeps both the client and I afloat.

I would love a call with the client if possible for starters. Even if that is not the case, a comprehensive brief on what is expected of me in the form of translation, clear outline on deadlines, font and style, and our payment arrangements would be necessary for me to take up the work. Also if it is in an area that does not make sense to me, as in if it is a subject that i do not understand and I would have to literally just translate, I would definitely decline the job by explaining to the client.
