My professional methodology for a standard translation project is

Reach an agreement about terms (deadline, prices, Spanish variants, target public, etc.).
Review the project.
Ask initial questions.
Maintain regular communication with the client regarding questions, updates, etc.
Deliver project with queries sheet detailing some important decisions (if this applies).
Answer any question or comment on the side of the client.

My modus operandi for communicating with clients is

Keeping an open line. You can ask me questions, and I hope I can ask you too. We get the feeling we’re collaborating on the project.

When clients request literal translations, this is how I handle the situation

It depends. I can adapt if that’s what the client wants. For example, regarding terminology, there are Spanish variants that are more accepting of words that sound more like English, and that’s okay. But even if terms are more literal, the Spanish structure shouldn’t be, and that’s something I would try to explain to clients.
