"One who works with joy will for sure have a great time doing so!"
A gamer since the age of six who loves both games and languages, and aims to make a life out of it. Not only am I passionate about tongues, but I also love to play with them… I mean, with their words! I truly believe that a translator must always try to give a bright happy life to a text, even if its past one wasn’t so bright at all! A good translator should always try to get a smile out of the reader, and I surely do my best to pursue that purpose!
For the past year I have worked as a freelance translator mainly in the videogames industry. Nowadays the job of a translator can’t be narrowed to translation itself but should be always widened to localization. What I do is games localization: I must target certain types of texts to a certain target audition (in my case, the people, the culture, and the language of Portugal), and assure its top quality in what regards consistency, terminology, semantics, syntax, morphology, and grammar. Also, I must keep in mind what kind of text am I dealing with and whether should I use a formal or informal approach. Also, thanks to my degree in Applied Languages (Línguas Aplicadas) I am prepared to work in the most diverse sectors related to the language industry and professions, including multilingual communication and writing, general, technical or specialized translation, business communication, localization or subtitling companies, tourism, Community interpretation, content management, production of terminological tools or editorial work in national and international organizations. One of my curricular units was Descriptive Linguistics 1 and 2, where I learnt how to use terminology and tools of analysis necessary for an adequate description of the phonological, the morphological phenomena of Portuguese, and the diversity of language usages. Another relevant curricular unit was Terminology and Information Techniques, where I learnt the various aspects of terminology, lexicology, and lexicography. Not only am I passionate abo tongues, but I also love playing with them… I mean, with their words! In my opinion, a linguist should always give their all to bring the best out of a piece of text, should it be through translation, localization, proofreading, or targeting… What we do goes beyond work, it is art. And being artists, we should always try to get a smile out of the reader, and I surely do my best to pursue that purpose!
