I have been translating and QC-ing subtitles for global heavy hitters for the past three years, excelling especially in the translation of classic Swedish and Polish movies and high-profile American TV shows, Attention to detail, excellent understanding of the target language and immersion into the target culture allow me to produce beautiful translations efficiently.
My name is Ivan Markota, a Croatian and English freelance translator/subtitler with experience in legal and literary translation, whose newfound passion and specialization is the wonderful world of subtitling. I am a master of using translation tools and a full-proof language aficionado — alongside my work in translation, I also write poetry and work as a columnist for an independent news portal in my home town of Križevci, Croatia. I am also one of the admins in the Croatian group Prevoditelji [Translators], the main online space where Croatian translators meet.
I would describe my work style as quite energy-based. I mostly try to use most of my energy in the morning to do the bulk of translation, and then spend a quieter part of day on re-reading it, trimming excessive fat and making the draft translation better in every aspect. I’ve leanerd that listening to my own rhythm gives better results and helps me get into the zone or flow.
