About Me

THE BEGINNING

It all started in a Portuguese village…

My neighbour, a widow old woman, was waiting for me downstairs.
I was wondering about what she was doing there and why she needed me…

Then I saw she was handling two letters. ‘I can’t understand these letters’, she said. ‘Could you please have a look and tell me their meaning?’

The letters were written in French. How could she understand them? Several husbands had emigrated to France many years ago. When they passed away, the widows, who had never been to France, started receiving letters from French institutions.

At that time, I was a teenager studying French and English. From then on, I helped her and others by translating French content to Portuguese. It was a time without computers, internet, or machine translation…
