Recently, I worked on a project that involved translating a technical manual from English into Chinese. The challenge was to maintain the precision of the original terminology while adapting it to a mainland Chinese audience, which required careful consideration of regional variations in technical vocabulary. For example, the English term “gearbox” could be translated as “变速箱” (common in mainland China) or “齿轮箱” (less common but still understood). I chose the former to align with the target audience’s familiarity.
