I translated lithograph poetry from a retrospective on Mexican artist Elizabeth Catlett and realized quickly that I would need to study and understand the history in order to do the translation justice. I learned about the Taller de Grafica Popular (a leftist artist print collective founded in 1937) and muralist movement in the context of the Cold War, imperialism and the American art scene. Some of the terminology included “Jaramillazo” referring to the dispossession of poor revolutionaries after the revolution and “churro art”, a term leftists used to refer to the meaningless and empty capitalistic art the American ruling class admired (as opposed to the Taller’s lithographs and murals that addressed social issues).
