Managing the “Untranslatable”

When translating manga and video games, so-called untranslatable terms are often the barrier to bringing jokes and true emotion through in the target language.

An example I tackled recently.

It’s crunch time. You have a translation to submit within a week, but you’re stuck on a few terms.

さわやかイケメン:

Option 1: Take the easy way out. Go for a direct translation of the words presented. “Refreshingly handsome guy,” comes to mind, but that feels… wrong.
Option 2: Do the research. Read articles. Scroll through social media. Scour your mind for similar expressive terms you in your target language. Fill a page with options, mix and match words. Finally, land on: “The perfect guy.”
