My career began in 2013, and from the start, I’ve been bridging the gap between traditional translation and modern localization. Grounded in computer science, my first role as a Localization Engineer in Shanghai was a deep dive into translation verification and enterprise software. It was there I learned that digital content isn’t just translated; it has to be fundamentally rebuilt for global markets.
I’ve worked on everything from popular non-fiction books to privacy apps used by millions. Today, I lead translation for a prominent US-based privacy organization, where I also handle over 500 user support tickets a month. This shows me firsthand how people actually use translated content and where the friction points are.
I’ve also partnered with organizations to help make internet freedom tools accessible worldwide, bringing digital rights resources to more people. My freelance work is just as varied, moving between corporate documents and literary pieces, which keeps me sharp across different industries and styles.
What excites me about this field is that it’s always changing, especially with new technology like AI. My CS background is key here—it helps me sift through the hype and find practical ways to use new tools to improve the work without losing the soul of it.
This mix of skills defines how I work. The technical side means I’m comfortable in complex software environments. The literary side keeps me focused on the human reader. I don’t just change words from one language to another; I reshape meaning and context so they work for a new audience.
I’ve seen firsthand how much good translation matters, whether it’s making complex tech understandable or ensuring a novel reads beautifully in Chinese. My goal is always the same: to create work that feels true—technically precise, culturally aware, and built to do its job effectively.
