I have been a professional translator now for 24 years. I live in Rochester, Minnesota, and focus on medical texts and local interpreting jobs related to healthcare.
When clients request literal translations, this is how I handle the situation
In healthcare, literal translations often will not do the trick. This is because in patient settings, discussion of symptoms or statuses is deeply personal and difficult to describe. The language we use in English, especially analogies we may use, may not translate well into another culture. I handle these issues on a case-by-case basis, always explaining the specific reasoning behind a linguistic decision while remaining open to change.
María has always been tremendous. She does both interpreting and translations, and has shined in everything she does. If I had to highlight one thing, it would be her in-person interpreting abilities in a hospital setting. Those situations can be very difficult, but María handles them with touch and professionalism.
